Partnerships & Solutions with MultiTech

On this week’s episode of the Real World IoT Podcast, host Ken Briodagh discusses how partnerships and bundled solutions are shaping the Industrial IoT with Derek Wallace, Director of Product Management at MultiTech Systems. MultiTech designs, develops and manufactures data communications equipment for the industrial Internet of Things — connecting physical assets to business processes to deliver enhanced value. MultiTech has been around for almost 48 years and has been diving deep into low power wireless and will be eventually working on devices with 5G.

Industrial IoT Complexity

Becoming successful in the Industrial IoT is based purely on the use cases targeted and how you are helping solve those use cases. The problem in terms of getting in and being successful is that it's based on who are you and what you are doing in the space. Industrial IoT spans across so many different integrations like hardware, software, communication technologies, and cloud integration that bringing it all together into an easy to use way is a challenge in and of itself. Partnership economies are very important in this space because of the point previously made. You are never going to find a be-all-end-all provider for an entire solution. There is an advantage to this idea of partnership, in that case, so that solutions can be tailored to each individual problem. Dennis speaks on how taking steps correctly to go from testing a case and learning to then scale up to an out of box deployment that can be managed is important to the success of every venture in the Industrial IoT. Ken responds saying he agrees but only in practice. In some cases, something is tested and then the user blames IoT if it doesn't work, effectively setting themselves back. Many of these bundled solutions are not mutually exclusive and can play a part in many problems whether specific or general according to Dennis. Both agree however that if from the start you are not defining what the problem is and where you need a solution provided, using a bundled or non-bundled solution won't matter because you won't see the success you are looking for anyhow.

Solution Support

When it comes to providing a solution, it's hard to say that in the industry we don't see people come in with a solution and slowly distance themselves once they receive their payment, not really following up with any help to keep a solution up and running with the changing environment. This is one of the places where MultiTech really stands out, providing support throughout the process to make sure a bad taste isn't left in their mouth like Ken alluded to earlier. Listen to the whole episode to hear more about managing your bundled solutions and how partnerships are shaping the Industrial IoT.
