On this week’s episode of Real World IoT, Dave McCarthy speaks on addressing customers’ needs and what the future of the IoT looks like. Dave is the Senior Director of Products at BSQUARE, a company that couples innovative software with advanced professional services, helping organizations of all types make IoT a business reality. When the IoT initially took shape many thought it was just another word describing M2M. Many companies then brought out a lot of connectivity platforms revolving around getting data from one point to the other which is only a single component of what the Internet of Things actually is. An issue now with these platforms is there is no single definition of what a platform is. All of these companies have different platforms, but to be successful you must move past the platform and really discuss with a client what their problem is to find a perfect solution for that situation. Another big overarching issue when it comes to the IoT and discussing the IoT among groups or customers is the use of these buzzword terms. Even the word “IoT” in some people’s minds isn’t the best descriptor, however it has been adopted for that usage and now we are stuck with it. An important question is posed for Dave asking, how can we avoid the mainstream terminology so we can allow for more specific and direct discussion when it comes to this space. Since it is very easy to get trapped in these terms, it becomes more difficult and ambiguous when you have to really getting down to the heart of a client’s specific problem.
When it comes to adopting new IoT strategies for your business, ROI should be a heavy focus. The whole reason companies are moving to these more advanced systems and ways of doing things is because of the benefits it brings. An interesting point made in this podcast is how that ROI differs from what you may think. Traditionally in the case of ROI one would think of your return being measured in monetary values. In the case of the IoT, the ROI within your business can be measured more in an increase in efficiency. A big point that Dave has the chance to touch on, and something that really needs to be addressed in the IoT space today, is the replacement of the older generation workforce with the younger generation. With this change will come a lot of lost knowledge unless it is dealt with correctly, and the Internet of Things has the potential to solve this problem. Having to relearn things is never a path you want to take as it will just take more of your time and resources, so providing a way to move the knowledge smoothly downstream as this time comes is very important to growing your business in the space.
