Benefits of IoT Solutions with Rugged Telemetry

On this week’s episode of the Real World IoT podcast, Jason Carabetta, CEO of Rugged Telemetry, joins our host Ken Briodagh to discuss adoption efficiency and the benefits of IoT solutions. Jason has spent the last 18 years of his professional life creating solutions in the IoT industry. Now working with Rugged Telemetry, Jason’s job resides in finding or creating more efficient IoT solutions for things like tank monitoring and oil and gas.

IoT Efficiency

To start, Ken raises a point about how the old school way of measuring in these industries is a dipstick. Some of the biggest challenges in these industries have to do with going out to where the tanks are if you were to manually take measurements like you would with a dipstick. With these kinds of IoT solutions the industries are able to become more efficient with data and preventative maintenance. Before you can even get to this point however, an even bigger issue is choosing the correct sensor. Not all things that are measured have the same properties, and part of what Jason makes sure happens is that customers are not only getting the product they need for the job, but that they are also getting educated on the subject as well. In legacy fields like this where people have been doing the same thing the same way for a long time, it can be difficult to get things going, but an important issue that clients want addressed regards installation. Getting something up and running is very important, so Ken wants to know how people in the industry, like Jason, are maneuvering that and making things as easy as possible for their customers. The technology side of things is what really scares a lot of people in these markets so keeping instruction and installation practices very simple is what keeps things moving as smoothly as possible.

Solutions and Benefits

In Jason’s experience an interesting factor seen with some people in the gas and oil industry is that they want this monitoring available to them because they feel as though their fuel is being stolen. An outcome of having IoT solutions available to them is that many see theft is not the answer, but production is. This is just one of the many examples of how data through these sensors is so important to helping people in the industry really get a leg up. Knowing how much and of what quality you are producing 24/7 does nothing but provide significant information and allow for companies to troubleshoot and get the most out of what they have. This provides for a higher ROI which is really important when putting a lot of money into solutions like this. Sensors and connected devices can be very expensive sometimes, but once the benefits are realized, companies are able to see how important it is that they take part in collecting and analyzing data.
