In this week's podcast, Ken Forster interviews Francesco Bonfiglio, the Chief Executive Officer of GAIA-X, a digital ecosystem initiative working to create an environment in which data can be shared and stored under the control of data owners.
Francesco has been at the forefront of digital innovation for over 30 years, working across high technology, military, and commercial software leaders across Europe. Before joining GAIA-X, he was CEO of Engineering D-Hub, one of Italy's leading players in the digital transformation of public and private companies. Francesco believes in the power of collective intelligence, lateral thinking, and teamwork as a propeller for transformation in the business and the whole life.
While the roots of GAIA-X are from the German Ministry of Economy and Energy, the initiative became an international nonprofit association in September 2020, with more than 300 members from over 25 countries worldwide. The objective of GAIA-X is to build European data spaces to share data across actors. New business values can be created through data sharing - putting together different types of technology and architecture in an open, non-proprietary way. GAIA-X is set to implement the first and most reliable autonomous decentralized architecture on planet earth.

GAIA-X is a project for the development of an efficient and competitive, secure, and trustworthy federation of data infrastructure and service providers for Europe, which is supported by representatives of business, science, and administration from Germany and France, together with other European partners. The project's name is derived from one of the first Greek deities, "Gaia", who arose from chaos and who, in mythology, stands as the personified earth for the woman giving birth. The project was first presented to the general public at the Digital Summit 2019 in Dortmund and has been continuously developed since then.
