Cloudification of OT

In this episode, Michael Risse, former Chief Strategy Officer of Seeq, the first application dedicated to processing data analytics, is interviewed by Ken Forster, discussing the "cloudification" of OT.

Michael’s professional focus has been on big data technologies and analytics. For over 25 years, he has worked as a consultant, advisor, and speaker. He is a founding partner at Seeq Corporation, transforming Industrial Process Data into actionable intelligence.

Prior to his recent work with startups and big data, he achieved successful results in a series of product and sales management roles at Microsoft. contributing to over $13B in revenue, as well as zero for V1 incubation efforts for Microsoft Visual Basic, Office, BizTalk Server, and the overall Server & Tools Business Unit.

Discussion Points:

  • What would you consider to be your digital thread?
  • You started your tenure at Seeq as a Microsoft veteran with over 20 years of leading key developer and enterprise offerings. How did this time prepare you to play a leading role in industrial analytics?
  • You joined Seeq in August 2013 as a founding partner. What was the origin story of Seeq?
  • You led key roles, including Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, going from demand creation to demand anticipation. This is a unique cross-functional skill. What enabled you to successfully execute both roles?
  • What are you most proud of at Seeq?
  • What is the state of the art in industrial analytics, and who do you see as some of the best practitioners of it?
  • One can't go too far in Operational Technology these days without considering the impact of the so-called 'hyper-scalers' such as Azure and AWS. In fact, Andrew Obin of BofA, in their industry forecast, listed this as one of five key trends for OT. Having been in both worlds, what impact do you see coming?
  • Along the same lines, one of the other BofA trends was the SaaSification of OT vendors, with Industrial Software likely to exceed $250B per annum by 2027, representing a CAGR of 15%+. Who do you see as the winners and losers in this expansion?
  • So, knowing that you've just left Seeq, what's next?
